Google Play Store adds UPI as the payment option for India
What is UPI?
"Unified Payment Interface" (UPI) enables all bank account holders to send and receive money from their smartphones without the need to enter bank account information or net banking user id/ password.
UPI has made the transaction of small amounts very easy for the users. It is an initiative and facility offered by the Government of India to promote the use of digital payment solutions in the country.
Google Pay (aka Google Tez in India) launched off with UPI support from the first day. Google promised at Google I/O 2019 that it would soon feature UPI as a payment solution within the Google Play Store, and now, it appears that Google is finally rolling out UPI as a payment option.
Google Play in India currently supports credit/ debit cards, netbanking, carrier billing (via Airtel, Idea, and Vodafone), and Google Play balance/ Google Play gift cards.
Adding UPI makes the transaction process more easier for the Indian users as it is the safest and the fastest way to perform any transactions.
In Google Play Store v 16.3.37, UPI can be seen as payment option.
“We know that emerging markets are a key area of growth for you all [developers], which is why are excited to announce pending transactions. This is a new class of delayed form of payment like cash, bank transfer, and direct debit.”- Aurash Mabod, Director of Engineering at Google, at I/O 2019.
Also the developer conference revealed that they may support cash payment as an option for Google Play Store. This will help users who don't have any other options like debit or credit, they will be able to top up their Google Play balance by visiting to the nearest store.
